Tickle My Tickler

One of the biggest struggles for any business is schedulingHome Business Planning and to-dos.  For most companies a good secretary or administrative assistant can make all the difference. For home based business this is usually not a luxury that can be afforded for various reasons.

If you find yourself forgetting important calls or meetings or just seem overwhelmed that your lists don’t get smaller, there are several things you can do.

  1. Begin by leaving your work and sitting down with a blank piece of paper.  Making sure you are able to focus is imperative.
  2. List all of your daily and weekly duties and begin to assisign categories to these items.
  3. Once your list is complete, be sure to review and then begin to list them all in their perspective categories.
  4. As you peruse this list decide on the priorities - is this an A, B, or C priority.  A being something that is immediately address, B less urgent and C could wait.
  5. If you see that your whole list is "A" then you must make some decisions - One, you need assistance in time management or Two, you need to re-evaluate if everything is really an "A".

When you finalize this list it will give you a good idea of where you stand and allow you to begin to prioritize your day.

Creating a tickler system can be done in many ways with many mediums.  One way I do not recommend is the sticky note on the wall approach.  Although sticky notes are useful, they need to be used responsibly because when they are gone, the record of that event or to-do is gone.

One of the most effective way in 2006 to organize your schedule for your home based business is to use a software application.  There are hundreds of applications that can help you with this from $1,000 software to Freeware…

One of the most widely used applications is Microsoft’s Outlook.  This application holds and manages a calendar, your contacts, a task list, and several other general needs.

The great part about contact management applications (Outlook) is that when you call, email, or schedule things with contacts in your list, it will create a journal entry and a reminder so you won’t be able to forget, unless you forget to turn on your computer.

You could also decide to use a hand-held device or a manual planner for your home business management.  These items could also be tax-deductions under some situations.

Whatever you decide to use, please know how to use it and just ‘use it’!  Nothing will make your life more organized just being there, it has to be put into practice.  If you are interested in learning more about how to truly become an organized home business owner, you can get coaching to whip you into shape.
