It never fails, just when you’ve gone through the ringer getting things started, you find that one of your neighbors decides to call the city zoning office to make sure you are allowed to operate a business inside your home.

It will help if you just do your homework before you get that call from the zoning office.  Beat them to the punch, call them first.  When you call, you don’t have to give a lot of details, just ask the basic questions about zoning ordnances in your city and steer away from telling them you are starting a business.

If you have a neighborhood or home owners association that has a covenant, be sure you read any information about conducting business out of your home and follow those guidelines.

If you are not allowed to conduct business due to zoning issues, ask for an exception.  We have been allowed to conduct business in restricted areas before due to the fact that clients weren’t coming and going at all hours and it caused no issues with traffic.

Sometimes local municipalities may ask for a steep fee in order to give an exception and if that exception is ever rescinded, you lose the money.

Again, do your homework and make sure you walk softly gaining all the information you can before making a lot of noise about working from home.
